Winches for Forklift - A winch is a mechanical piece of equipment which specializes in winding out or pulling in or winding up or letting out the tension of a wire cable, cable, wire rope or a rope. It its most basic form it is made of a spool along with a connected hand crank. More complicated winches are found at the heart of machines like tow trucks, elevators and steam shovels. At times the spool could be called the winch drum. Complex designs have gear assemblies that can be driven by pneumatic, internal, hydraulic or electric combustion drives. Various winches could comprise a mechanical brake or a solenoid brake or a pawl and ratchet mechanism in order to prevent it from unwinding unless the pawl is retracted.
Generally, the cable or rope is stored on the winch, then again the capspan, a similar machine, does not store the rope. In sailing, when a line is trimmed on a sailboat, the crew member operates the handle of the winch using one hand while tailing the other to be able to maintain tension on the turns. Some winches have a cleat or stripper to maintain tension. These designs are called "self-tailing" winches.
Usually, a winch is used in large theatrical shows as a part of the mechanism so as to transfer staging. Sometimes there are also winches actually imbedded in the stage to be able to help transfer the various larger set pieces off and on the stage.
Recently, winches have been fabricated in particular designs for water and snow sports. This new generation of winches is designed to pull riders rapidly across a body of water or of snow. This can stimulate a riding experience which is typically supplied by a boat, snow mobile or a wave runner.
